Hey guys, anyone have much experience with vacformed canopies? Always thought about trying them to replace the canopies on the older kits but they seem pretty fiddley.

I like to use them when I can, mostly because they have a more realistic thickness than supplied canopies. Especially in the smaller scales of older kits where some of the canopies can be 1 scale foot thick.

They're pretty easy to work with too, as long as you take your time cutting them out.

Yeah I quite like like them but only when I really need to use them. And you usually get a couple in a pack so if you stuff one up you can use the other one.

Im only now coming back to modeling as a hobby. But back in the day, I used to make my own canoies. I used the kit part as master and a small vac-box I hooked to my vacuum cleaner. I got thermoforming plastic and made a small frame from scrap wood.

I heated the whole thing over the stove burner. It worked well, if a lttle crude.

Today I wouldnt mess with it, except in the larger scales.

I always wanted to try making my own using the stove top and vacuum method. I've got quite a few older kits which have crappy canopies that need to be replaced, but usually I just build them with the canopy close and run with that.
